The British Pharmacological Society is leading Clinical Pharmacology Week 2019

Nov 11, 2019

The British Pharmacological Society is leading Clinical Pharmacology Week from 6th to 12th October 2019 and is encouraging members and the public to get involved. The week is part of a broader project, joining with our partners in the Clinical Pharmacology Skills Alliance[1] to address critical UK clinical pharmacology skills gaps. Our joint action plan for UK clinical pharmacology includes a strategic objective to raise the visibility of clinical pharmacology and develop opportunities for people to experience it first-hand.

There are several exciting activities planned to help raise the profile of clinical pharmacology and to explain how it benefits the health and economy of the UK.

Clinical Pharmacology Abstract Competition

We are running a competition for medical students to write a short abstract about safe prescribing, closing on 25 October. Five winners will be invited to our annual meeting, Pharmacology 2019, and will present for the chance to win £250. Full details of the competition, including how to enter, are on our website.

NHS Twitter Takeover

Prof Jamie Coleman, who is Deputy Chair of our Clinical Committee, will take charge of the @NHS Twitter feed from 7th to 11th October. His tweets will show what a typical working week looks like for a clinical pharmacologist. He will also share interesting pharmacology facts to spark conversation and run polls to test people’s knowledge about medicines. You can join in on Twitter using #ClinPharmWeek.

Growing Clinical Pharmacology at BMJ Live

We will be at the British Medical Journal careers fair on 4th and 5th October to talk to medical students and junior doctors about clinical pharmacology training and encourage them to apply. We will be “growing” clinical pharmacology with Society-branded biodegradable plant pots complete with seeds and compost for attendees to take away.

We encourage our members, partners and all interested parties to get involved with Clinical Pharmacology Week and to contact us if they are running events related to clinical pharmacology so that we can help support them.

In addition to raising visibility and access to clinical pharmacology the Clinical Pharmacology Skill Alliance seeks to:

  • Develop practical support to ensure clinical pharmacologists have a consistent, relevant and high-quality training experience
  • Work in collaboration with the sector to determine where clinical pharmacology can add the most value, and develop partnerships with other professionals to increase our collective impact
  • Work with sector leaders to develop and implement a future-focused workforce strategy that meets the needs of the NHS and supports the UK life sciences industry
